SYRACUSE – Wawasee High School head basketball coach Phil Mishler has turned in a letter of resignation. The letter was turned in today, June 27, effective immediately. Mishler will still maintain his physical education teaching position with the high school.

Mishler had a rocky final season with the Warriors in 2012-13, going just 5-16 which matched his worst mark set in his first year of coaching in 2000-01. Mishler overall was 168-126 in 13 seasons at the helm, helping turn around a program which struggled for a good portion of the late 1990s. The 168 wins rank Mishler first in program history among the 10 coaches the program has had.

Wawasee won sectional titles under Mishler in 2005, 2006 and 2010, and won a regional crown in 2005. In 2006 and 2010, Wawasee reached the regional finals before bowing out of the state tournament.

Mishler’s wife, Susan, was just hired in May to take over as principal at Wawasee Middle School.

The Wawasee athletic department has not made an announcement of a replacement as of Thursday as the resignation has not been submitted to the school board. The next scheduled WCSC board meeting is July 9.
