Look for changes outside the Syracuse Public Library this summer. The ivy and some bushes are being removed in preparation for a new sign. The board of directors will discuss the purchase of a sign at the next board meeting at 6:15 p.m. Monday, June 24. Young adults have a terraced planting that will change as it matures on the Harrison Street side of the library.

Adults, youth, and children have programs on Tuesday, June 11, to increase their awareness of gardening activities. The Garden Club is providing help at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, when children plant flowers around the flag pole. The Kidz Book Club that meets at 5 p.m. on Tuesday is planting flowers along with having their usual book discussions. Adults are offered meetings with “master gardeners” to talk about seed saving and other problems and joys in the garden. Join our first presenter, Jim Carpenter, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The staff at the library is interested in sponsoring a seed exchange and the first meeting will focus on the preparations for seed saving. Events at the Syracuse Library are free and open to interested people.

Looking for Volunteers
The Friends of the Syracuse Library are always happy to accept money on behalf of activities and purchases for the library. The Friends main fundraiser is the annual Bag of Books Sale taking place Thursday, Aug. 1. They need approximately twenty people to donate a few hours for this project. FOL volunteers also sort the used books for the ongoing book sale. Information about volunteering and activities of the FOL is being presented at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 13.

The library is in need of some instructors for small, basic computer classes. People who know about using email, creating documents, and general computer use are asked to share their experience so others can have the ability to access information. The community also has a need for skills training in the use of iPhones and other communication devices. Becky can be reached at 574-457-3022 to coordinate volunteers.

Summer Reading
Dig into Reading, the eight-week summer reading program for children, is getting started. Terrific Tuesdays at Two, and Fantastic Friday Films at 11 a.m. require no special registration. Thursday Tea Parties need pre-registration to attend. Prizes are awarded to children who are signed-up and meet their goals in the reading program. Sign-up to read in Dig into Reading and get an invitation to play video games when Gametruck Party comes to the library.

Teens have six weeks of activities in the Beneath the Surface reading program. Middle school and high school students are invited to attend Teen Times at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and the Fantastic Friday Films at 2 p.m. Sign-up is required to win prizes, be entered in the grand prize drawing, and to spend a couple of hours in the Gametruck.
