Warsaw Blanks Warriors Again

WARSAW – The Warsaw baseball team collected its second shutout of the season versus county rival Wawasee Wednesday.

The host Tigers got a strong pitching performance from Tyler LaFollette to blank the Warriors 4-0 in Northern Lakes Conference action on a sun-drenched day.

Starter LaFollette went the first six innings for the Tigers. The sophomore was stellar as he allowed just six hits, while striking out three and walking two to notch the win.

Justin Oberlin pitched the seventh inning to garner the save for coach Mike Hepler’s squad.

Warsaw won 6-0 at Wawasee on April 15 behind a strong pitching effort from Forde Ness.

The Tigers, who have won two in a row in league play, wasted no time Wednesday in taking control. Warsaw tallied three runs in the home half of the first inning to seize command from the start. The hosts added a run in the second frame for the 4-0 final.

Starter Derrick Sorensen took the loss for Wawasee, going the first three innings and allowing four earned runs.

Warsaw outhit the Warriors 9-7 and each team committed one error in the contest.

Shay Hepler, Caleb Moneyheffer and Michael Miller each had two hits to lead the Warsaw offense.

The trio of Jason Ferguson, Josh Frantz and Moneyhoffer each had an RBI for the Tigers.

Drew Anderson led coach Eric Screeton’s Wawasee squad with a pair of singles.

The Warriors, who have now lost five straight NLC games, left nine runners on base in the contest.

Warsaw improves to 6-6 overall and 5-3 in NLC action. Wawasee drops to 3-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

Wawasee rolled to a 20-3 win in the junior varsity contest Wednesday night.

Both Warsaw and Wawasee return to NLC play on Friday. The Tigers play at Goshen and the Warriors travel to Elkhart Memorial.
