SYRACUSE- Two down and a long way to go.

After starting their season off right over the weekend by taking first in the Northrop Invitational, the Warrior golf team stayed on course with another win to start out this week. Wawasee outshot Central Noble 158-200 to claim its first home victory of the season Tuesday night at South Shore.

While it was certainly not the score they had hoped for, it was more than enough to get the win.  Head coach Steve Coverstone knows his team can do better but was happy to see the team win and improve in a couple of areas.

“Just looking at the score sheet I can tell that our guys did a great job at staying away from big scores,” Coverstone said. “I think we only had three double bogies all day. When you hold down the bad holes you have a chance to play well.”

The day could not have gone much better for the Warriors as all five starters beat their respective opponents. Leading the way for Wawasee was Dylan Cousins. The senior finished with the low score for both varsity teams bringing in a 37, highlighted by a birdie on number seven.

The Warriors were without senior golfer Luke Jackson Tuesday night which opened up a spot for freshman Cal Heinisch. Jeffrey Moore joined Heinisch on the course Tuesday night as the only two freshmen playing varsity for the Warriors. Both tied for the second lowest score overall with a 40. Heinisch and Moore each parred five of their nine holes.

Mason Germonprez had what he described as an off day but still finished with the third-lowest score of the match. The Warrior sophomore birdied number one on his way to finishing with a 41 on the day, besting Central Noble’s Jason Woods by 12 strokes.

The Warriors expect to have a revolving door at the four and five spots all year. One player getting the call to varsity today was Maclain Herr. The sophomore finished his day with a 44, good enough for fifth best of the match. Herr’s day was highlighted with inking a par five on the sixth hole, one of five pars on the day for the sophomore.

Brett Gallmyer had the Cougars low score with a 46. Three of the four other Cougar golfers finished with a score of 50 or more. Needless to say, it was an all-around rough day on the links for Central Noble.

The Warriors (1-0) are happy to start the season off with both an invitational and match win but their coach knows there is much improvement to be made.

“We shot 158. That could’ve been better. The exciting thing is that our JV shot 162, so we’ve got some depth to this team. There’s not much to say right now, we’re happy with this effort but when we get into the conference we will have to do better than this,” stated Coverstone.

Wawasee will get back into tourney mode as they gear up for the Whitko Invitational this Saturday at Noble Hawk GC in Kendallville. Play begins at approximately 9:00 a.m.

In junior varsity action, the Warriors won easily defeating the Cougars 162-232. Tristan Atwood shot par with a score of 36, leading all Warriors on JV and varsity. The JV will play in the LaVille Invite Saturday morning starting at approximately 8:00 a.m.
