Earth Day

INDIANAPOLIS – A rite of spring and one of the largest of its kind in the nation, the annual Earth Day Indiana Festival is 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 27 at White River State Park, 801 W. Washington, St. in downtown Indianapolis.

The free, outdoor festival features 130 environmental and conservation
exhibits, live music, good food and special activities for kids. Up to
30,000 people typically attend the festival, making it one of the largest
Earth Day events in the United States, according to Stephen Sellers, Earth
Day Indiana¹s executive director.

Learn ways to reduce energy consumption and costs, to eat healthier, to
reduce toxins in the natural environment and in your home, and how to
recycle almost anything.

The music stage features local artists performing their own, original songs.

Evan Slusher, Melodius Thonk, Diamond Hill Station and the Snakehandlers
will perform on the main stage, which is located for the first time on the
oval to the west of the visitor’s center. Also on the main stage are The
People’s Voice, an authentic group of Native American drummers and singers.

The children’s tent mixes education with entertainment and creative crafts.
Favorite activities include T-shirt decoration featuring clean water themes,
sponsored by the Industrial Operators Association, a wildlife presentation
by Animalia, and a performance by the popular Bill Bailey.

Local restaurants and caterers offer a variety of delicious food, including
gourmet pizza, Cajun, Indian, Mexican, Caribbean and some vegetarian dishes.

Earth Day Indiana is a small nonprofit organization dedicated to
environmental education and awareness. Exhibits are in large tents and the
event is held rain or shine.

The park is a great biking destination, and the Pedal and Park bike corral
will park two-wheeled transportation. Dogs on a leash also are very
welcome.
