Eiteljorg Museum Hosts ‘Wrecking Crew’
INDIANAPOLIS – The story behind the studio session musicians who were Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” will be shared in a Midwestern premiere, at 4 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art.
“The Wrecking Crew” chronicles the history of the musical geniuses who provided the audio backdrop for songs like “Be My Baby,” “Mrs. Robinson,” “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling” and many more. They were also the unsung heroes whose horns, drums and strings provided the memorable layers of sound heard on records by The Beach Boys, The Monkees, Cher and a host of others.
“You have to realize, these guys were at the top of their game at the right place and at the right time,” says “Wrecking Crew” director and producer Denny Tedesco, who will introduce the documentary at the premiere. Tedesco’s father, Tommy, played guitar in the group. “To make a living at an instrument puts you in a small minority. But to record as many hits as they did, they were even part of a smaller minority.” Yet, the group, whose recordings led to six “Record of the Year” Grammys, never received public acclaim in their heyday.
Eiteljorg president and CEO John Vanausdall said he is thrilled to bring “The Wrecking Crew” to the museum. “Our patrons – especially the Boomers – will surely enjoy hearing from these musicians. Even though they weren’t known by name, their musical skills influenced an entire generation.”
A labor of love by director Tedesco, this 2008 film is also ultimately a love letter to the legacy of his late father and musician friends in the Crew. It includes wonderful interviews with Brian Wilson, Cher, Nancy Sinatra, Herb Alpert, Glen Campbell, Gary Lewis, Leon Russell as well as Crew members themselves. Viewers of the film will hear songs by Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, The Monkees, The Byrds, Mamas and Papas, Sonny and Cher, The Beach Boys and dozens of others. With 131 music cues, the American Federation of Musicians says this film may be one of the largest soundtracks of any film in history.
The documentary is part of monthly programming related to the Eiteljorg Museum’s Guitars! Roundups to Rockers exhibit. The screening is included with general museum admission.
