1985A Warsaw Police officer was injured in a crash late this afternoon when his squad car was broadsided.

Warsaw Police Officer Sgt. Clay Layne, 42, was at the intersection of Sheridan and Colfax streets when a vehicle driven by Carrie Graves, 60, of Claypool, pulled into the intersection and struck the squad car.

According to police, Graves was at a stop sign and said she looked both directions before proceeding. Sgt. Layne, who was on routine patrol, had the right-of-way as he was eastbound on Sheridan Street. Both vehicles spun 90 degrees and came to rest on the southeast side of the intersection. The driver’s side air bags activated on the police car.

DSC_1954Layne complained of pain to his side and back and was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital by Multi-Township EMS. Graves refused medical treatment.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department investigated the crash for Warsaw Police. Also assisting at the scene were officers of the WPD, MTEMS and the Warsaw/Wayne Township Fire.
