Genevieve ‘Jenny’ Oswald
Genevieve ‘Jenny’ Oswald, 90, of Syracuse, Ind., passed away on Feb. 19, 2013, at her residence after a brief illness.
She was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., to David and Austia Slater. After graduating from North Side High School, she married the love of her life John R. (Jack) Oswald in 1943, and raised seven children on the family farm. Jack and Jenny moved to Syracuse in 1975 where they owned the Three Flags Drive-In Restaurant. After retirement, they moved to Titusville, Fla., where they enjoyed watching every shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral. Jenny returned to Syracuse after Jack’s death in 2001.
Jenny was a 50-year member of the Washington Women’s Club and Lincoln Homemakers of the Allen County Extension Service. She was an active member of Syracuse Calvary United Methodist Church and Ruth Circle since 1977. She chaired the Craft Bazaar for seven years and helped prepare and serve many community dinners at the church. She belonged to the “For Fun” group and was appreciated for her clever table centerpieces and baking skills. She was a regular Sunday morning greeter, arriving early and greeting all with enthusiasm and warmth. She loved boat-In in the summer and could be seen sitting on the top deck of the Lily Pad every Sunday morning. She enjoyed attending the Wagon Wheel theatre, eating and shopping with friends, Senior Mothers Club, playing cards and family football afternoons at her home. Jenny will be remembered as an energetic volunteer, a devoted mother and wife, and an avid Notre Dame football fan.
She is survived by her children: Rebecca (David) Jewel, Portland, Ore.; Jerry (Toby), Orlando, Fla; Marty (Aaron) Meyer, Syracuse; Byron (Tammy) Oswald, Syracuse; Kenneth Oswald, Indianapolis, Ind.; Pamela (Douglas) Gadson, Goshen, Ind.; seventeen grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Jenny was preceded in death by her husband and her son John Oswald.
