Although no threat was ever made, Winona Lake Police and Grace College Campus Safety personnel acted quickly Friday to apprehend a student on campus who was in possession of a handgun.

At 2:55 p.m. Friday, WLPD was contacted by Grace College Campus Security who had received information that a student was in a classroom and in possession of a handgun in his backpack.

Officers of WLPD, along with one Indiana State Police officer, met with campus  personnel at the location and asked the student to step out of the classroom.  Once outside the classroom, the student’s backpack was removed from his person and he stated the gun was in the backpack.

A handgun, which was not loaded, was located and confiscated from the student. The student, Jared James Mannarino, 24, was transported to the Winona Lake Police Department and questioned about his possession of the weapon. It was determined Mannarino did not possess a handgun permit.

Mannarino did apply for a permit, but as of Friday, had not received it. Being in possession of the weapon also violated Grace College rules that prohibit the possession of a firearm on campus.

Mannarino was transported to the Kosciusko County Jail and booked on a class A misdemeanor charge of carrying a handgun without a permit.

At no time did Mannarino threaten anyone and there was no danger to any person. Mannarino was completely cooperative with the police and campus safety personnel.
