Brown Goes Off, Hornets Sting Warriors

Simon Brown punctuated a tremendous start for the Angola Hornets boys basketball team, scoring 34 points in a 59-56 win over Wawasee in Angola.

Brown scored 21 of his point total in the first half and helped Angola end a modest three-game losing streak to the Warriors. Ryan Gaff added 16 points for the Hornets.

In an odd stat line, Wawasee (1-1) had nine players score, but only Ryndan Aaron scored more than seven points, finishing with 19 points. Alex Clark and Jake Hutchinson both scored seven points. Jake Thompson, who scored just five points, left the game in the first half with a right shoulder injury, the same shoulder he hurt his sophomore season. Last season, Thompson had surgery on his left shoulder which was injured during the Columbia City holiday tournament. His status for Friday’s game at Manchester is unknown.

The Warriors, which hit 15 three-point shots in a lopsided win against Fairfield on Nov. 20, made just seven threes Saturday night. Wawasee’s biggest three-pointer, made by Aaron in the closing seconds, was disallowed by a Wawasee time-out to keep Angola ahead. Angola hit just two three-pointers and were only 13-22 from the free throw line, but Brown and Gaff combined for 19 field goals made.

The Wawasee JV opened the night with a 41-33 win over Angola.

Wawasee will return to the court Friday night at Manchester.

Lady Warriors Move To 5-0

KiLee Knafel poured in another 30 points and her team moved to 5-0 after pounding Prairie Heights 55-33 Saturday afternoon in LaGrange.

Knafel hit just one free throw in the first half, but made 10 in the fourth quarter in her third 30-plus point outburst this season. Kylee Rostochak added 11 points and Erin Wiktorowski hit a pair of threes among her eight points.

Wawasee were coming off a nine-point win Friday night at East Noble while Prairie Heights (3-1) suffered its first loss less than 24 hours before in an overtime setback at Westview.

The Wawasee JV picked up its first win of the season with a 35-17 triumph in the matinee at Prairie Heights.

Wawasee, which is 4-0 versus Northeast Corner Conference teams this season, will face yet another NECC challenger Tuesday when West Noble comes calling to the Hardwood Teepee.
