
SYRACUSE — Technicalities were all that separated Wawasee from a November Super Duals title in its own tournament Saturday afternoon.
Criteria points were the difference in what became a 41-40 decision given to Columbia City against Wawasee in the final round of the Duals. City’s pins on Wawasee became the deciding factor that broke the tie and kept the Eagles unbeaten at 5-0 while Wawasee settled for 4-1 on the day.
Wawasee earned a 30-27 win over Whitko in round one, 39-33 against Tippecanoe Valley in round two, 56-24 roll of West Noble in the third round and 48-27 decision over Fort Wayne South Side in the fourth stanza.
City picked up its wins by taking Valley 36-30, South Side 64-18, Whitko 42-36 and West Noble 48-36 heading into the Wawasee showdown.
Tippecanoe Valley were 3-2, Whitko 2-3, West Noble 1-4 and South Side 0-5 in the round robin. Whitko’s Greg Newman, a former Wawasee star, was undefeated at 113 pounds and was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Duals.
Valley had Devin Childeers at 132 and Cody Runyon at 145 go undefeated while Wawasee had a trio of unbeatens in Nick Rozow at 170, Brian Clark at 195 and Chad Eppley at 285.
