Wawasee senior guard KiLee Knafel was voted the IBCA Player of the Week.

Wawasee High School senior guard KiLee Knafel was chosen as one of three girls high school basketball Players of the Week by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association for the first week of the season.

Knafel’s only game of the week was a huge one, scoring 42 points on 17-of-26 shooting including seven three-pointers made in a 64-41 win at Westview. The senior, who is third all-time in scoring at Wawasee, recently signed a letter of intent to continue her basketball career at Indiana University South Bend.

Knafel was among 17 nominees from District 1 of the northern third of the state. Nominees also from the Northern Lakes Conference included Madison Schrock from Northridge, Aimee Swihart of Goshen and Jennifer Walker-Crawford of Warsaw.

Swihart had a big week for Goshen in a pair of wins at Lakeland and home over Bremen. The guard netted 51 points in the two wins and added seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the Bremen victory. Walker-Crawford had a career-high 21 points and seven rebounds in Warsaw’s home win against Huntington North. Schrock tied a school record with seven three-pointers made and scored a career-high 25 points in Northridge’s win at West Noble.

Also being honored by the IBCA were Richmond’s Mackenzie Taylor and Charlestown’s Justice Burden. Taylor averaged 24 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and 7.5 steals in Richmond’s two wins. Burden had 21 points and 14 rebounds in Charlestown’s opening win.

Player of the Week winners are chosen by the IBCA from each of the three districts. Girls winners are chosen now through the state championship week of March 2. Boys winners will be chosen starting in two weeks and through the state finals week of March 23.
