HAMMOND — Grace’s men’s soccer team tied its hottest streak of the season as a 4-2 win over Purdue Calumet gave the Lancers their fourth straight win.

The Lancers (11-4-2) used a pair of second-half goals from Steven Fiema to hold off a late charge from the Peregrines (3-8-1) in Grace’s regular-season finale.

Grace’s offense was in high gear for most of the afternoon as the Lancers recorded 22 shots, 15 of which came in the second half.

Trent Smith started Grace’s scoring with an early strike in the fourth minute which was assisted by Ben Draper. Freshman Kyle Hamlin doubled Grace’s advantage with a goal at the 43:38 mark.

The Peregrines, who were credited with 12 shots in the opening period, broke onto the scoreboard at the 49:37 mark.

The Lancers quickly squelched any momentum with an immediate response 17 seconds later from substitute Fiema.

Purdue Calumet managed to pull within a goal when Papa Otoo beat Grace’s defense in the 55th minute, but Fiema added his second goal of the half four minutes later to end the Peregrines’ threat.

Fiema, the reigning Crossroads League Offensive Player of the Week, has scored seven goals in the past four matches and 12 goals overall. He currently ranks third in Grace’s record books for goals scored by a freshman.

The match was a physical one with 30 fouls, 18 of which belonged to Purdue Calumet. The Peregrines also owned four of the six yellow cards in the match.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Cole made six saves to earn the win for Grace.

Austin Altimus led Grace with six shots and three shots on goal, and Smith and Fiema both tallied four shots.

The Lancers will host the first round of the Crossroads League Tournament at Miller Field on Saturday.
