A Milford woman who disregarded a stop sign at a railroad crossing and was struck by a train has died.

Carolyn Handy, 77, of Catherine Street, passed away this afternoon at Parkview Regional Hospital where she was taken following the 2:09 p.m. crash. Handy suffered head and internal injuries when her truck was hit by a train at the Emeline Street crossing in Milford.

According to the Kosciusko County Fatal Accident Crash Team, Handy was eastbound on Emeline Street when she drove into the path of a southbound 37-car Norfolk Southern freight train. Witnesses told police it did not appear Handy stopped for the tracks. There is a stop sign at that crossing and the train conductor said he had been activating warning bells through the town.

Police say Handy complained of back and chest pain and had possible lacerations from glass.

Initially, Samaritan air ambulance was called to transport the victim, but weather conditions prevented the helicopter from flying. Handy was taken by MTEMS to Fort Wayne.

Milford Police were assisted on scene by Milford Fire Department, MTEMS and Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County Fatal Accident Crash Team.
