Navy Petty Officer Third Class Monica Fisher, daughter of Mary and Ronald Fisher, Milford, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal on Oct. 5, as a result of her quick actions.

Mary explains her daughter had been working as a ground controller at the time of the incident. Fisher, who had been handling a phone call, caught an error others had missed, namely that a truck had been authorized to cross in front of a flight of jets.

“She dropped everything to prevent an accident,” said Mary.

Through her actions and ability to multi-task, Fisher averted a potentially fatal accident through initiating radio transmissions to stop the truck.

Along with receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Fisher was awarded a lapel pin and certificate commemorating her actions.

“We’re just really proud of her,” said Mary.

Fisher joined the Navy shortly after graduating from Wawasee High School in 2009. Currently, she is stationed down in Key West, Fla., where she is now an air traffic controller. Mary stated they will be visiting her next month, something the family is very excited about.

Fisher’s orders will up around July or August, according to Mary. She noted Fisher is fortunate in that she will have some say in where she is stationed next.
