SYRACUSE — The Wawasee volleyball team hosted the Lady Trojans of Triton High School Tuesday night in Syracuse for senior night. It would prove to be a senior showcase both on and off the court for the Lady Warriors as they would sweep Triton three sets to none 25-13, 25-20 and 25-20.

The first game was the one that really set the tone for the night. Triton, sporting pink jerseys all throughout October in honor of breast cancer awareness, was able to grab a small lead early going up 2-0. The Lady Warriors, though, would put a stop to that running off five unanswered points and never looked back thanks to a pair of aces from Anne Beer and a series of blocks from the Wawasee front line.

Game two featured a better performance from Triton thanks in part to a solid effort from Lady Trojan seniors Shana Anderson and Marissa Ross. Anderson had an ace early on to help boost her team and Ross had six assists in the second game, on her way to a 15-assist night. Unfortunately for Lady Trojan head coach Samantha Keel, the great play only came in spurts. Keel offered some feelings on her squads play after the game.

“What frustrates me is that we practice so well and then we come out and we don’t play what we practiced.”

The Lady Warriors jumped on the opportunity to take advantage of several Triton mistakes and followed a solid serving effort from sophomore Alli Ousley to take a more comfortable lead. Wawasee controlled the last half of the game but could not shake the Lady Trojans until the end of the game.

The third and final set did not look much different than the second. The two squads played one another close early, but thanks to more clutch serving from Ousley and two key blocks from Taylor Spangle, the Lady Warriors would again come out on top.

After the game coach Keel continued to talk about what she wants to see from her team moving forward,” Keel stated. “We have had a lot of good changes this year but I wish those would just come out in their play. I wish they would receive the credit that they are due, that I think they are due.”

Breanna Lemler led the Trojans with six kills while Ross had 15 assists and Anderson added nine digs.

Wawasee head coach Jeff Phillips used his interview time after the game to express his thanks to his senior class.

“Tonight was just a good night to honor five seniors who work so hard and two managers that have been here since my first year and who have also worked really hard. Those seniors accepted a challenge and hopefully we can say more about each senior class in terms of total wins and Northern Lakes Conference records moving forward.”

In regards to the class of 2012, Phillips expressed the mark they have left for his program. “These girls have done a ton for the program and a ton in terms of getting Wawasee volleyball on the right track.”

Beer and classmate Kaitlin Goines combined for 16 kills to pace Wawasee’s offense. Hunter Gaerte led the team with 26 digs. Ousley had a big night with 26 assists and a blistering nine aces.

The win moves Wawasee to 18-14 on the season. The Lady Warriors will wrap up its regular season Thursday night when they welcome in NLC opponent Northridge. The varsity match will start after the junior varsity game which is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.

For Triton, the loss drops them to 10-15 on the season. The Lady Trojans will finish their regular season when they take on another NLC team, the Plymouth Pilgrims, Thursday night.

In JV action, the Lady Warriors also came up victorious with a two game sweep of the Lady Trojans 25-20 and 25-10.
