MARION, Ind. – Grace College junior Trey Stoll started off the season in strong fashion as he was the medalist in  the first tournament of 2012 as his total of 144 won the IWU Invitational.

Stoll was in fifth place after turning in a score of 74 on the first day. He steadily charged up the leaderboard in the final day of action, however, firing a second-round 70 to win the individual medal by one stroke.

The Lancers finished seventh out of 10 teams overall. After mostly struggling with a 321 in the first round, Grace’s 310 on Tuesday allowed the team to finish ahead of fellow Crossroads League opponents Huntington, Mount Vernon Nazarene and Saint Francis. Holy Cross College won the event as a team.

Caleb Rovenstine was second for Grace with a two-day total of 157. He fired off a 75 on Monday, which was the eighth-lowest total in the first round.

Taylor Fanning had a dramatic turnaround to finish third for Grace. He shot 89 in the first round but lowered his score by 13 strokes (76) to finish with 165.

Kal Denlinger carded an 85-82 to round out Grace’s scoring.

With the win, Stoll has been the medalist at three tournaments for the Lancers since last fall.

The Lancers will next compete in the Holy Cross Invitational on Sept. 17-18 at Warren Golf Course.
