Sands Leads Golfers To NLC Wins

Morgan Sands took medalist honors to pace the Warsaw girls golf team to two wins Monday as the Tigers opened Northern Lakes Conference play.

Sands fired a 47 to lead a consistent effort by the No. 18 Tigers. Warsaw shot 191 as a team to defeat both Northridge (215) and host Concord (231) and Northridge in the league opener at the Bent Oak  Golf Club in Elkhart.

Warsaw, now 5-0 overall on the season, got 9-hole totals of 48 from the trio of Nikki LaLonde, Elizabeth Meadows and Alexis Manwaring to easily win the NLC opener.  Ashley Murrell  shot a 54 for the Tigers.

Madison Stewart shot a 50 to lead Northridge (3-4, 1-1). McKenna Grimske led Concord with a 50.

Warsaw (5-0, 2-0) returns to NLC action Thursday versus NorthWood and Goshen at McCormick Creek in Nappanee at 5 p.m.

 

Tennis Team Tops Marian

Straight set wins at four positions paced the Warsaw boys tennis team past Mishawaka Marian 4-1 Monday at WCHS.

AJ Herendeen and Sam Rice posted a straight set victory, 6-2, 6-4,  at No. 1 doubles to lead the way for the Tigers.

The hosts completed the doubles sweep as Will Petro and Connor Singrey prevailed 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. The Tigers also got wins from Evan Miller, who notched a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles, and AJ Jansen, who won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Marian’s lone point came at No. 1 singles where Jake Julian topped Kyle Wettschurack 6-2, 6-4.

Warsaw won the JV match by a 7-2 count. Winning for the Tigers were singles players Nick Hamrick (No. 1), Drew Schram (No. 2) and Caleb Ray (No. 5).  Also posting wins were the doubles teams of Caleb Snyder and Nic Jansen at No. 1, Nikos Schlitt and Christopher Herendeen at No. 2, Spencer Reincke and Drew McCollom at No. 3 and Evan Bremer and Mario Hernandez at No. 4.

Warsaw (3-0) plays at Penn Wednesday at 5 p.m.
