The National Weather Service office in Northern Indiana released this photo of a shelf cloud as it approached the office in northwest Indiana.

According to the NWS, shelf clouds form as warm, moist air rises along the front edge of a gust front and are associated with severe thunderstorms. These clouds are especially prevalent when the air is very stable near the base of the thunderstorm.

Today’s forecast is calling for widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. Otherwise, it will remain  cloudy with temperatures steady near 77 degrees and winds out of the SSW at 15 mph to 20 mph.
