Warsaw Police and the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the death of a toddler that happened Monday afternoon at his babysitter’s home.

At 1:39 p.m. yesterday, medics and police were called to the 900 block of South Union Street after receiving a 911 call of an unresponsive two-year-old boy. CPR was reportedly in progress.

Payton Brettell, the 18-month-old son of David and Nova Brettell, of Warsaw, was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital and pronounced dead at 2:13 p.m. by the emergency room physician.

An autopsy was performed this afternoon by Dr. McDonald at the Northeast Regional Forensic Center. The preliminary results found accidental death due to positional asphyxia, or accidental strangulation. The final autopsy and lab results are pending.

An unofficial report claims the child may have woken from a nap, crawled from his crib and into a car seat, where he somehow strangled himself.

At this time, police believe the incident to be accidental and do not believe any foul play was involved, however, the case remains under investigation by WPD, the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office, and Child Protective Services.
