The Kosciusko County Red Cross is busy assisting two families who lost everything in an apartment fire early Tuesday morning in Syracuse.

The Red Cross provided assistance to replace lost clothing, food and other basic needs. The upstairs and downstairs apartments suffered major damage and were deemed a total loss.

The fire, which occurred on Harrison Street in Syracuse, displaced a group of three friends sharing an apartment and a family of four in the second apartment, including two young children.

Canteen service was also provided by the Red Cross of Kosciusko County for the fire, police and EMS officials. Three responding fire departments were served food and water as they battled the blaze. Departments from Turkey Creek, North Webster and Syracuse were the responding units.

Kim Komdeur, American Red Cross operations director said, “As heart-wrenching as it is to see families experience such a loss, this is why we are here: to help people when they need it most.”

The American Red Cross provides assistance to local families who experience a disaster like a house fire; fulfilling immediate needs in their first steps toward recovery.
