
SYRACUSE — Wawasee High School won several awards in the Midwest region of the National Scholastic Art Awards. More specifically, the region is referred to as the Northwest Indiana & Lower Southwest Michigan Regional Art Awards, formerly known as the Friends of Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
It covers 18 counties in Indiana and Michigan, including Kosciusko County.
The competition was for any student in grades seven to 12 to submit art or writing created within 2015 and submitted no later than Dec. 17. Work of the students will be on display at the South Bend Museum of Art from Jan. 30 to Feb. 27 before moving onto the national competition in New York. Dates have not been announced yet for the national competition.
Wawasee had 11 Gold Key winners and these automatically qualified for the national competition in New York City. Winners were Taylor Bontrager, Jarrah Bussert (twice), Karen Caballero, Madison Coy, Riley Kunkle, Rachel Mullins, Wynter Rhoads, Kara Schrock, Savannah Schwarts and Rachel Starrett.
